Sentex offers to buy BenQ mobile unit
2007/1/10
By Simon Thiel MUNICH, Bloomberg
Sentex Sensing Technologies Inc. offered to buy BenQ Corp.'s bankrupt German mobile-phone unit after liquidation proceedings began this month.
"Sentex is in discussions with several financial institutions for the strategic financing for the deal to succeed," the Cleveland-based company said in a Prime Newswire statement Monday evening.
An investor might help to rescue some of the more than 3,000 jobs at BenQ Mobile in Germany. BenQ, Taiwan's biggest maker of cellular phones, on Sept. 28 decided to stop financing the German division less than a year after taking it over from Siemens AG. Liquidation proceedings began last week after a three-month search for an investor ended without success.
Sentex, which didn't disclose how much it will bid for the company, said its interest is "based on the strong technology" and the "market access in Europe" of BenQ Mobile.
BenQ Mobile insolvency administrator Martin Prager is in talks with 'several potential investors,' Regine Petzsch, his spokeswoman, said Monday. Prager isn't allowed to disclose any names, she said.
Shares of Sentex, which has a market value of US$4.4 million, rose 5 percent to 4.2 U.S. cents in the U.S. Monday.
After the liquidation proceedings had started, Prager said on Jan. 3 he would try to sell the company's assets at the "best possible price." He said he would continue talking to interested investors and that the company needed a "three-digit sum" in euros in order to resume operations.
Once among the world's top three phone brands, the handset maker first stumbled under Siemens AG and then collapsed under BenQ because both owners failed to compete with rivals such as Nokia Oyj.
The bankruptcy has hurt suppliers from chipmaker Infineon Technologies AG to phone-parts makers Perlos Oyj and Balda AG. Siemens AG handed the unit to BenQ after years of losses.
